PEABODY

Peabody, previously the town of Danvers, became the town of Peabody in 1868 and the city of Peabody in 1916. Named for famed philanthropist George Foster Peabody, the city of Peabody, for most of the late nineteenth century and into the 1970s, was one of the world’s foremost leather producers, with over one hundred tanneries. It was the jobs that the leather industry provided that led to the influx of immigrant Jews, as well as Greeks, Poles, Turks and Portuguese, which provided the labor force necessary for a thriving industry.
